Innovating Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Baltic States

Alvis Zvirgzdins with a student from Riga French Lyceum

During the visit, the student was introduced to the fundamental principles of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), including key concepts, instrumentation, and practical aspects of NMR spectroscopy. The session covered the role and differences of NMR probes, as well as rotors used in solid-state NMR experiments. An overview of the available NMR infrastructure at LIOS was also provided, highlighting spectrometers operating at magnetic field strengths ranging from 300 MHz to 800 MHz.

It was also emphasized that NMR activities are carried out in collaboration with international partners — CRMN Lyon and CIRMMP Florence — within a knowledge transfer framework. This collaboration supports the exchange of expertise and strengthens NMR capabilities in Latvia.

In addition, the student was introduced to the MR Latvia initiative, gaining insight into its goals and how it enhances national research capacity and fosters collaboration in the field of magnetic resonance.

Alvis explained the differences between solid-state NMR (ssNMR) and liquid-state NMR, emphasizing their distinct applications and methodological approaches.

To connect theory with practice, the student explored real research topics, including fungal cell walls and proteins, demonstrating how NMR is applied to study molecular structure and dynamics.

Beyond the technical aspects, the shadowing experience provided insight into the daily responsibilities and workflow of an NMR spectroscopist, offering a realistic perspective on laboratory work and research routines.

This experience aimed to inspire interest in science and provide a hands-on understanding of advanced analytical techniques in magnetic resonance.
